White Paper:
Applied Alarm Management
Using the Familiar Six Sigma Approach

Six Sigma is a methodology for improving quality through a continuous effort to eliminate defects. Six Sigma stresses continuous evaluation in order to recognize additional defects or previously eliminated defects creeping back into the system. Applying a Six Sigma structure to an alarm management effort creates a pathway to sustained alarm improvement.

Our white paper "The Real Cause of Alarm Problems" illustrated how alarm system design and performance can be affected by a number of operating and business issues including those directly associated with control systems, such as sensor calibration and loop oscillation, detached influences such as business unit expectations and environmental pressures, and uncontrollable factors such as ambient temperature changes or rainfall. The paper connected those influences directly to plant performance through their net impact on the information operators rely on when controlling a process.

Because alarms are integral to operator information, the wide range of influences on the alarm system is why alarm management is crucial to safely reaching business goals. The diverse pressures to change the alarm design are far too compelling to leave them to their own agendas. Even if an alarm system is "perfect" there will still be problems. Valves will need maintenance, the weather will change, raw materials will vary. Alarm management provides a structured mechanism to control alarm related changes and must be integrated into your culture as a part of normal procedures. This will maintain a stable, viable alarm system, and push performance beyond previous expectations.
