Case Study:
Mirant Reduces Operator Alarms by 70% Using Basic Alarm Analysis Leading to Minor Configuration Changes

Mirant's Dickerson Generating Plant is a coal, gas, and oil fired facility that produces 853 megawatts of electricity, primarily servicing Montgomery County, Maryland, in the Washington, DC area. Management at the plant knew that operators were confronted with too many alarms. The reams of paper from console printers offered little as a way to develop a solution.

Mirant implemented LogMateAMS to replace their logging printers and to provide the ability to fully evaluate site alarm activity. The site-wide archive and unlimited, thinclient access proved critical to the effort, providing every member of the project team access to meaningful data and useful evaluation tools.

Analysis showed that many of the alarms being displayed to operators had nothing to do with operations, they were maintenance alerts. Following a more thorough evaluation, the data confirmed that almost 70% of the alarms displayed on the operator consoles were actually maintenance messages.

Rationalizing Alarms with the Alarm Knowledge Base

The LogMate AMS Alarm Knowledge Base (AlarmKB) simplifies the process of reviewing alarm settings through easy, desktop access to a tool where alarm configuration can be reviewed, commented, changed, and approved. LogMate AMS AlarmKB is an integrated part of the AMS suite, accessed by a single click from the thin-client browser interface. The KB displays a grid of all system Tags and alarms. Selecting one will display a completely customizeble form for entry of comments, engineering notes, areas and severity of alarm importance, and any other pertinent data. Information can be shared among an alarm design team, resulting in a projected change to the system. Changes can be reviewed and accepted or rejected, creating an audit trail of alarm system evolution.
